The Jolie Pez Project: The Jolie In NewfoundlandPosted: June 24, 2011
Serious fans of the travels of our favorite action figure, The Jolie, know that she made three stops during her first Canadian tour. They also know that only two were published. The Jolie acted as if the third never happened. She moved on to Las Vegas and the Virgin Islands and pretended like people wouldn’t notice.
Well, people noticed and they spoke up. There were protest marches at Blurt Headquarters. I contacted Dottie Maggie, who hosted The Jolie in Newfoundland and writes the fine blog Trust Me, I’m A Doctor. I told her about the protests. Together, we agreed to release this lost episode in the interest of public safety.
The Jolie On The Rock – The Fun
The Jolie arrived in Newfoundland and wasn’t long in making friends with some of the locals. I think she took pity on Robert, and his nose…she’s a softie deep down inside, and will probably return to Newfoundland to punch me for saying so.
She appreciated the view from my deck, and while not impressed with the snow still kicking around in late March, she liked being able to plan her takeover of downtown from one vantage point.
The Jolie came along to bingo, and was coaxed into helping spin the spin wheel. The ladies at bingo were big fans.
Ready to go! No dabber? No problem! She’ll just punch out the squares she gets. More satisfying that way.
The Jolie arrived in St. John’s just in time to attend the annual Beer Fest. So many beers to try! And such perfect sized lil’ cups.
She was so amazed by this one beer, she had to make some notes in her guide books. Unsure about whether this liquid hot dog scenario was a good thing or a bad thing.
The morning after Beer Fest…Not so much a time.
The Jolie wasn’t about staying in a house with some Giant Kidney Worms, had to make sure the seal was secure.
The Jolie had less luck containing the other animals in the house. Most of them ignored her, but Tristan was feeling brave one day and came for a sniff.
I asked The Jolie if she’d like to help me bake a cheesecake…but then when she saw the bag of creme eggs she decided to “help” me unwrap them. Funny, all the wrappers seem empty…
The Jolie On The Rock – The Sights
A nice sunny day was a long time coming, but once it arrived it was up to Signal Hill!
Checking out Cabot Tower.
Discovering the view from Cabot Tower. Can see the whole city from here.
The Jolie was disturbingly interested in the artillery around Signal Hill. I tried to explain that they were long unused, but she was pretty sure she could fire ‘em up if she needed to…
On the way down the hill, we had to stop and check out the Newfoundland and Labrador Retriever statues. Official Provincial Dogs, for the win!
She wouldn’t let my real dog get away with this, and I’m pretty sure she wanted to take this photo just to taunt him.
Next stop: Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America. From here, if you rise early enough (which I never do and not even The Jolie could kick me out of bed on time…) you can be the first person in North America to see the sun rise on a new day…
The guns at Cape Spear put the cannons at Signal Hill to shame. These huge gun barrels were part of Cape Spear’s wartime armament. Originally in place in Philadelphia, they were moved to Cape Spear in 1941.
The Jolie learned all about whales, but unfortunately didn’t see any. A little too early in the year for whales.
Lighthouses, fortunately, are a year round attraction. The Cape Spear lighthouse was built in 1836 and is Newfoundland’s oldest surviving lighthouse. This structure has been restored to its original state, while the original light is in a modern lighthouse down the coast a bit.
All in all, a fairly successful visit. Much was drank, much was seen and no lives were lost that I’m aware of. The Jolie was sent on her way back stateside and springtime finally arrived for real and I got very caught up in enjoying the rare sunshine and very neglectful at sharing this record of her visit…oops!
Thanks to Maggie for risking everything to have The Jolie visit her and showing her such a great time!
The Jolie’s next published adventure will be Hoboken, NJ, followed by Boise ID and Detroit, MI. Don’t forget to let me know if you want to be on the list for a visit from The Jolie. She is hoping to spend the summer and early fall in the US and Canada (she’s been told there are more than three places in Canada) then start an around the world tour.
