I had to click on it, thinking it was a sarcastic comment on unfortunate dating and marital choices. It wasn’t.
This is Shoeless Joe Jackson. He has nothing to do with this.
Scientists think the connection between neanderthals and humans happened between 100,000 and 60,000 years ago. Apparently the two species dated briefly somewhere in that window of time. Mr. and Ms. Labcoat have just figured this out.
Joe Jackson knew neanderthals mated with humans. He documented his findings in 1978.

One to four percent of the current human non-African genome comes from that period when neanderthals and humans set up on a blind date by well-intentioned friends who thought they’d make a “cute couple”.

About a hundred Neanderthal genes help make us what we are today. Sometimes those wild nights sort of follow you around for longer than you realize. In this case, the dalliance with the neanderthals has followed us around for countless generations. Maybe those tequila shots at last call weren’t such a good idea for our ancestors.

Apparently more of us dig the unibrow than we are letting on.
